TBR: 12th November

In the 25 years since blasting onto the techno scene, Karl O'Connor AKA Regis is there to celebrate EPM's 20th anniversary with another maverick release. The 4th addition to the EPM20 series, Beyond The Reach Of Time EP offers 3 cuts that fully benefit the label and the scene with persistent, consistent quality. Made around 1999, these recordings didn't quite fit anything Regis was involved with at the time. Stepping away from his own label, Downwards Records, Regis is glad to work with EPM as the opportunities have been fed both ways over the years. No stranger to extravagance in performance and production, Regis is keen to push every button when it comes to giving his listeners something to remember and recognise. From playing DJ venues the world over to performing a live electronica concert with a host of stars in the scene, Regis has been a driving force in the scope of this art-form.

No Love From Above rams in with a massive thumping bass and snare on the off-beat that shudders and bumps as the tempo thrashes in its cage. New waves of bass and cymbal strike down a smoother dance-pulse as sonic effects knock in wooden echoes through disparate surroundings. Roaming synthesiser notes swell as they wander during the relentless pulse of driving bass-drums. Juxtapositions of hope and despair ricochet from wall to wall as thumping percussions batter the crowd, swaying to ethereal undertones.

Another rumbling and full-on bass driven rhythm outspans with tuneful low-end percussion lending a hypnotic repetitiveness. Clinking and jarring bells then begin to rattle in revolving patterns that swap places with the focus. Cymbals barge in on gathering momentums only to be swept up by the frantic assemblage of bass. Thumping dance-patterns form ever-present tempos as subtle manoeuvres throw jostling impeti through little hoops. At The Side Of Silence punches in the solar plexus region and doesn't stop until we're exhausted.

The final number, Beyond The Reach Of Time Part 2, launches from the touchpad with chiming harmonic bells and thunderous bass that drives in like a hammer to a nail. Thumping percussion surges as the bell motif sinking down into the spongy texture before rising into a sonic bob. Tuneful percussive sounds bring out dimensions of dance as a cymbal pattern lifts from the waters like splashing spotlights. Rolling hills of bass and tubular percussion swarm and expand like universes into a shadowy layer that glistens under its own creation. The intensity grows until a sunrise moment unveils the darkness and realises the passion with luminous synths and riding melodies.
