DOT EP

Out: October 22nd

Craftily blending synthesiser pop with downtempo electronica, Niels Meukens brings to life his latest project. Multani represents the synthesis of dreamy escapism with the blurring of genres and adaptations of rhythm techniques. Making use of organic instruments including guitar and voice, Multani uses effects and synthesisers to elevate the natural sounds into something fantastical and otherworldly. The drummer from Belgium has fortified himself in a brilliantly fertile field that matches his compositional soul.

Ethereal tones mumble in the shade as warping elevations of amplitude touch the next dimension. A ruffled harmony stretches in notions of understanding as gradients of tone are brought into higher spectra. The sound shifts and a brand new direction is discovered. A chirpy melody begins to strike down with unison drums as effected vocals lend the high end to the chorded delivery. The rhythm progresses, its tempo remains the same but the pacing buries itself in the oncoming throb of digital bass. Lime introduces us to the sentiment of the artist and with uplifting grooves spliced into deep-down provocative shoe-gazing, the compass finds true north.

Melon is next, it staggers in on a cinematic barrage of sleepy notes. Keyboard meets bass as the drum kicks in with a heavy room sound. Chord progressions and sliding rhythms whistle on major keys that sparkle with modal inflection. A churning of jazzy ambition drives the progressive nature of the synth-wave formation and lifts the music from the safety-net of similarity to anything else. Laid back and introspective, this soundful poise allows the edging in of experimental combinations within structured beats.

The next track beams into being on a barrage of bubbling tones that buoyantly bob on whole-tone bass. Melody spans the distance in a spiralling eddy of morning sparkle. Everyday's The Same is a short and introductory number for the next track. Cycle uses the phrase that named the previous number in a vocal wave of dreamy presence as child-like bells and trombones muse on rainy windows and bookshelves. An imaginary avenue spans out as the mind is free to wander along the non-linear and symbolic imperfections jostling for subtle attention.

Finishing up with Melt, a driving drum-beat hammers a smooth and sultry groove into the airspace. Wobbly tones produce chorded glyphs as whistling lead synthesisers snake through the shaking spaces. Luminary undertones elevate pitches of interest as a squelching bass imprints boot-shapes into the soft and malleable footing. With a sudden cut, the music stops and leaves us feeling slightly naked on the top of a plateaux, waiting patiently for the next adventure.
